Your First Session

What will your first session look like?

One of the biggest worries people have before their first session is surprisingly simple: “What am I actually supposed to talk about?”

Some people have so much going on they don’t know where to start. Others worry they won’t know what to say at all.

And underneath that, there can be a strange pressure to somehow get therapy right — to explain yourself properly, have all the answers, or even convince me that what you’re struggling with is serious enough to need therapy.

You don’t need to do any of that.

When you arrive, I’ll warmly greet you, get you comfortable, make you a drink and then I’ll take the lead.

You don’t need to prepare anything or work out where to begin.

During that first session, I’ll ask quite a lot of questions and guide the conversation. I want to understand what’s happening, how it’s affecting you, where some of these difficulties may have come from and what might be keeping them going.

By the end, I’ll start bringing all of that together into a psychological formulation — essentially, a clear picture of what’s going on, why it makes sense that it’s happening, and, most importantly, what we can actually do to change it.

My aim is that you leave your first session with two things:

Confidence and hope.

Confidence that you’ve finally found someone who understands what’s happening.

And hope because, rather than just knowing what the problem is, we’ve started working out what we’re going to do about it.

Hopefully, you’ll leave already looking forward to your next session.
