Psychotherapy & Counselling Sheffield
Sometimes we don’t need someone to challenge us. We need someone to understand us.
Therapy should be a place where your experiences are taken seriously. A place where you don’t have to defend yourself, justify your feelings or win someone over to your point of view. When we feel genuinely understood, our nervous system often begins to settle. From that place, it becomes much easier to step back from the immediate distress and become curious about what is really happening.
Together, we’ll explore the patterns that have developed over time and understand why they made sense in the context of your life. Rather than simply managing symptoms, we work to identify the processes that are keeping difficulties going and find new ways of responding that fit who you are.
This is the most flexible way of working that I offer. Instead of following a single therapy model, I draw on over 20 years of experience across a range of evidence-based approaches, including Person-Centred Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Schema Therapy, EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS) and attachment-informed approaches. The therapy is tailored to you, not the other way around.
My work is strongly influenced by attachment theory and modern neuroscience. Increasingly, research suggests that much of our emotional life is shaped by processes occurring beneath conscious awareness, with the nervous system playing a central role in how we experience safety, connection and threat. Understanding these patterns can help make sense of reactions that often feel confusing or overwhelming.
At the same time, I value many of the original insights of psychodynamic thinking. Our early relationships shape how we see ourselves, other people and the world around us. Rather than remaining rooted in historical theory, I integrate these ideas with contemporary psychological science and neuroscience to create a therapy that is both compassionate and evidence-informed.
Above all, I believe the relationship between therapist and client is the foundation of meaningful change. Research consistently shows that feeling understood, accepted and safe within the therapeutic relationship is one of the strongest predictors of positive outcomes. My aim is to offer a warm, collaborative and non-judgemental space where we can make sense of your experiences together and help you build a life that feels more authentic, connected and fulfilling.

Particularly for matters of neurodivergence and phobias. I don’t say this lightly but the work we completed in a short period of time has been life changing.Posted on Google Tasha Ravenscroft21 February 2023Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have been having EMDR sessions with Cheryl for about 6 months. In this time she has guided and supported me through some of the toughest times in life, for which I will be forever grateful. She is kind, caring, very welcoming and brilliant at her job. Seeking therapy and especially the process of EMDR can be scary and daunting, but at all times I felt safe, held and understood. I could not recommend Cheryl enough and implore anyone seeking therapy to contact to Cheryl.Posted on Google Victoria Elmore10 February 2023Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. An absolutely excellent and affordable service perfectly located in the city centre. Cheryl is amazing and I would recommend her to anyone (in fact I have). By far the best therapist I’ve ever had.Posted on Google Liv Abbott10 February 2023Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I’ve been working with Cheryl for the last 10 months. This is by far the most collaborative relationship I’ve had with a therapist, as teamwork plays a key role in treatment and recovery. We’ve used talking therapy and EMDR to process previous trauma, which has been life changing. Cheryl has taught me practical tools which I can use on an everyday basis, as well as explaining the theory and psychological/physiological processes at work. My self esteem and emotional regulation have improved massively since I started therapy. I’ve made huge changes in my life and we are constantly reflecting on how to step towards my goals. Great service could not recommend more 🙌Posted on Google Lola Sami9 February 2023Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I’ve been seeing Cheryl since September and it’s been one of the most comfortable and affirming experiences I’ve had in therapy. It was because of her sessions that I felt encouraged to seek out an ADHD diagnosis and Cheryl has been invaluable at helping me make sense of the condition. The warmth, empathy and kindness with which she conducts her sessions have been transformative. Having been to therapy before, this is the first time I’ve felt like a therapist has understood me and been able to adequately assess the cause of my difficulties. After having multiple therapeutic experiences that weren’t helpful, I became resigned at the thought that my issues couldn’t be treated. By understanding the cause of my problems and devising ways to treat them, my sessions with Cheryl have imbued in me a newfound hope and optimism and have given me a more positive outlook on my future.Posted on Google T9 February 2023Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I've seen several different therapists in my life, but none of them have shown the patience, skill, and care of Cheryl. Every time I see her I leave feeling lighter and more hopeful, and I've already made significant progress in the short-time I've been working with her.Posted on Google Georgina Makings9 February 2023Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
